Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim (1) By the Book that makes things clear, (2) Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (6) He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. (7) There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Aye! they're in doubt sporting. (9) So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" (14) Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, (17) Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. (18) And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. (19) and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains (25) And the cornlands and the goodly sites (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. (29)
