Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the Clear Book (2) Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) Nay! They play in doubt. (9) But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke (10) Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. (11) 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] (17) saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. (22) [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, (25) And crops and noble sites (26) and pleasant things in which they delighted! (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
