Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha, Meem. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan,, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. (4) The command that We have been sending (5) as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. (8) Yet they are in doubt, playing. (9) So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, (10) That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' (15) The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. (22) So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! (27) Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. (28) Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. (29)
