Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha, Meem. (1) By the Scripture that maketh plain (2) Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Aye! they're in doubt sporting. (9) Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, (13) Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? (14) Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. (22) (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! (25) And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, (26) And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! (27) As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
