Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha, Meem. (1) By the Clear Book. (2) We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). (3) On which all affairs are sorted out and decided (4) by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger (5) as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." (14) If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). (15) On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. (16) ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. (19) And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And corn-fields and noble buildings, (26) and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
