Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Scripture that maketh plain (2) We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. (9) So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, (10) Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. (11) (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. (12) [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. (15) On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. (24) How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. (25) and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, (26) And comfort wherein they were amused. (27) Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. (28) And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
