Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim! (1) By the Book that makes things clear;- (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6) the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, (17) Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; (18) "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; (19) and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. (24) How many were the gardens, springs, (25) And cornfields and noble places! (26) And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, (29)
