Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim (1) By the Clear Book. (2) We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) (3) On which all affairs are sorted out and decided (4) Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), (5) As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (6) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. (7) There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11) (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. (19) and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. (20) 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' (21) And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' (22) (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. (23) And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. (24) How much they left behind of gardens and springs (25) And crops and noble sites (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. (28) The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. (29)
