Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
HA MIM. (1) By the clear Book, (2) Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), (5) A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) Nay! They play in doubt. (9) Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. (10) Covering the people, this is a painful torment. (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. (15) The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. (16) ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." (22) We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. (23) And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. (24) How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, (29)
