Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
HA MIM. (1) By the Book that makes things clear, (2) We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan,, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. (3) Therein every wise affair is made distinct, (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. (8) Rather they are in doubt, playing. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" (14) We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. (15) On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. (25) And crops and noble sites (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
