Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. (4) As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no worship except for Him He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, but they play in doubt. (9) Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. (15) The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. (16) ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, (19) and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” (22) (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) And the delights which they had been enjoying! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
