Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
HaMeem (1) The perspicuous Book is witness (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom (4) Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". (12) [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, (13) yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” (14) We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. (15) The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. (16) ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. (24) [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, (25) And the cornlands and the goodly sites (26) and pleasant things in which they delighted! (27) Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. (28) The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. (29)
