Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) an order from Us. We are ever sending. (5) As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. (15) The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. (16) ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." (21) (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” (24) How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, (29)
