Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. (10) Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. (11) O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" (12) How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. (15) The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. (19) I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. (20) "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." (21) He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. (24) They left how many gardens and fountains, (25) sown fields, and how noble a station, (26) And comfort wherein they were amused. (27) That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
