Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha'. Mim. (1) The perspicuous Book is witness (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) Yet they are in doubt, playing. (9) Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. (12) How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. (15) On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. (20) "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. (24) They left how many gardens and fountains, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. (29)
