Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan,, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Yet they are lost in doubt and play. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. (12) How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. (19) And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." (22) We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” (23) And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And crops and noble sites (26) And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; (27) Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! (28) The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. (29)
