Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HA MIM. (1) CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, (5) A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. (7) There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. (8) Yet they are lost in doubt and play. (9) Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke (10) enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. (11) Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. (15) On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. (18) Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." (22) We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. (23) And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. (24) How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. (25) and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, (26) And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; (29)
