Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Scripture that maketh plain (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), (5) As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. (9) So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. (15) On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. (16) ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains (25) And fields and grand palaces! (26) And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
