Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha'. Mim. (1) I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) In it every wise matter is determined (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. (7) There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. (8) Yet they play about in doubt. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. (12) How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13) Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. (14) We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" (24) They left how many gardens and fountains, (25) And crops and noble sites (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
