Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) (3) On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] (4) at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. (7) There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." (14) We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. (15) On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. (16) ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. (19) "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' (22) (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. (23) Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
