Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Clear Book. (2) Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), (5) A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. (7) There is no worship except for Him He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' (21) He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And cornfields and goodly positions. (26) And comfort wherein they were amused. (27) That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
