Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha, Meem. (1) CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! (2) Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. (3) On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] (4) The command that We have been sending (5) as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. (8) Nay, but they play in doubt. (9) So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, (10) That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. (11) 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” (14) We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. (15) But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! (16) ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, (17) Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” (18) Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. (19) and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” (22) We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! (27) As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. (28) Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. (29)
