Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
HaMeem (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) Therein every wise affair is made distinct, (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) Aye! they're in doubt sporting. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. (12) How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. (13) But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." (14) We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). (15) The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. (20) 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' (21) Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. (22) [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. (23) and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" (24) How many were the gardens, springs, (25) and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, (26) And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! (27) Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. (28) and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. (29)
