Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. (1) I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). (2) Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. (7) There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. (8) Nay, but they play in doubt. (9) So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13) yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. (16) ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, (17) saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, (18) and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, (19) I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. (20) If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains (25) And cornfields and noble places! (26) And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. (29)
