Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) By the Clear Book. (2) We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan,, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. (10) Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11) [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). (19) "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) And cornfields and goodly positions. (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. (29)
