Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. (1) By the Book that makes things clear, (2) We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan,, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) By a command from Us indeed it is We Who send. (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) Rather they are in doubt, playing. (9) Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke (10) Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". (14) Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' (22) "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” (24) How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! (25) sown fields, and how noble a station, (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
