Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the clear Book, (2) We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) (5) as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, (6) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) Rather they are in doubt, playing. (9) So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? (14) We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). (15) However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. (16) ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], (17) Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. (20) But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." (21) And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. (28) And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
