Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). (2) We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. (4) determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. (11) Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. (15) On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. (16) ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' (22) "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) And cornfields and goodly positions. (26) And comfort wherein they were amused. (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. (29)
