Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the clear Book, (2) Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. (3) (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined (4) determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Rather they are in doubt, playing. (9) So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, (10) That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. (11) (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. (12) How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." (14) 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' (15) However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, (19) “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. (23) and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) And fields and grand palaces! (26) And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! (27) Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. (28) And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). (29)
