Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha Mim! (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: (5) A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. (7) There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. (8) Yet they play about in doubt. (9) Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. (10) enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. (16) ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. (19) I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. (29)
