Vanity (Al-Zukhruf)
89 verses, revealed in Mecca after Consultation (Al-Shooraa) before Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) By the Clear Book (2) We have made it an Arabic reading text so that perhaps you may understand. (3) and behold, it is in the Essence of the Book, with Us; sublime indeed, wise. (4) Should We withdraw the admonition from you because you are a people far gone in transgression? (5) And how many a prophet have We sent among the ancients. (6) And never came there unto them a prophet but they used to mock him. (7) We utterly destroyed them although they were greater in might than these. The examples of ancient peoples have gone before. (8) And if thou (Muhammad) ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely answer: The Mighty, the Knower created them; (9) Who has made for you the earth like a bed, and has made for you roads therein, in order that you may find your way, (10) And Who sent down water from the sky with a proper measure, so We revived a dead city with it; this is how you will be taken out. (11) it is He who created all living things in pairs and gave you ships to sail in and beasts to ride upon (12) so that you may sit firmly on their backs. Then once you have mounted them, remember your Lord's favour and say, "Glory be to Him who has subjected these creatures to us; we would never on our own have subdued them. (13) And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return." (14) And they allot to Him a portion of His bondmen! Lo! man is verily a mere ingrate. (15)
