SAD. I CALL to witness the admonishing Qur'an. (1) Those who deny the truth are steeped in arrogance and hostility. (2) How many ancient generations did We destroy? (On facing Our torment) they cried out for help, but it was too late for them to escape. (3) Now these [people] deem it strange that a warner should have come unto them from their own midst - and [so] the deniers of the truth are saying: "A [mere] spellbinder is he, a liar! (4) What, has he made the gods One God? This is indeed a marvellous thing.' (5) And the eminent among them went forth, [saying], "Continue, and be patient over [the defense of] your gods. Indeed, this is a thing intended. (6) We have not heard of this in the last religion; this is surely an invention. (7) What, has the Remembrance been sent down on him out of us all?' Nay, but they are in doubt of My Remembrance; nay, they have not yet tasted My chastisement. (8) Do they have the stores of the mercy of your Lord, the mighty and munificent? (9) Or have they the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all between? If so, let them mount up with the ropes and means (to reach that end)! (10) A defeated host are (all) the factions that are there. (11) Before them (were many who) rejected messengers,- the people of Noah, and 'Ad, and Pharaoh, the Lord of Stakes, (12) And the Thamud, and the people of Lut, and the dwellers of the wood; these were the confederates. (13) None of them was such that it did not deny the Noble Messengers, therefore My punishment became inevitable. (14)
