Strike for them a similitude -- the inhabitants of the city, when the Envoys came to it; (13) When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened them with a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you." (14) "You are only men like us," they replied; "Ar-Rahman has not sent down any thing. You are speaking only lies." (15) They said, 'Our Lord knows we are Envoys unto you; (16) "And our duty is only to convey plainly (the Message)." (17) The (people) said: "for us, we augur an evil omen from you: if ye desist not, we will certainly stone you. And a grievous punishment indeed will be inflicted on you by us." (18) They said, "Your omen is with yourselves. Is it because you were reminded? Rather, you are a transgressing people." (19) A man came running from the farthest part of the city saying, "My people, follow the Messengers. (20) Follow those who ask of you no fee, and who are rightly guided. (21) "And why should I not worship Him (Allah Alone) Who has created me and to Whom you shall be returned. (22) What! Shall I take any deities apart from Him whose intercession will not avail me the least were the Merciful One to bring any adversity upon me, nor will they be able to rescue me? (23) "Then verily, I should be in plain error. (24) Lo! I have believed in your Lord, so hear me! (25) It was said (unto him): Enter paradise. He said: Would that my people knew (26) How my Lord has forgiven me and made me one of those who are honoured!" (27) ۞ And after that, no host out of heaven did We send down against his people, nor did We need to send down any: (28) It was only a single blast which made them extinct. (29) OH, THE REGRETS that [most] human beings will have to bear! Never has an apostle come to them without their deriding him! (30) Are they not aware of how many a generation We have destroyed before their time, [and] that those [that have perished] will never return to them, (31) They shall every one of them be arraigned before Us.
