Narrate to them the example of the people of the city when the messengers came to it. (13) When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened them with a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you." (14) They said, 'You are naught but mortals like us; the All-merciful has not sent down anything. You are speaking only lies.' (15) They said: 'Our Lord knows that we are Messengers to you. (16) but we are not bound to do more than clearly deliver the message [entrusted to us]." (17) (The people of the city) said: We augur ill of you. If ye desist not, we shall surely stone you, and grievous torture will befall you at our hands. (18) They said, "Your evil augury be with you! Is it because you are admonished about the truth? Surely, you are a people transgressing all bounds!" (19) Then there came running, from the farthest part of the City, a man, saying, "O my people! Obey the messengers: (20) “Obey those who do not ask any fee from you, and they are on guidance.” (21) And what reason have I that I should not serve Him Who brought me into existence? And to Him you shall be brought back; (22) What, shall I take, apart from Him, gods whose intercession, if the All-merciful desires affliction for me, shall not avail me anything, and who will never deliver me? (23) Surely in that case I should indeed be in evident error. (24) I believe in your Lord, so hear me' (25) (Having been murdered by the disbelievers) he was told to enter paradise (26) how my Sustainer has forgiven me [the sins of my past,] and has placed me among the honoured ones!" (27) ۞ And We did not send down upon his people after him any soldiers from the heaven, nor would We have done so. (28) nothing was [needed] but one single blast [of Our punishment] - and lo! they became as still and silent as ashes. (29) Ah, woe for those servants! Never comes unto them a Messenger, but they mock at him. (30) Do they not see how many generations We have destroyed before them? Never shall they return to them. (31) They will all be brought into Our presence together. (32)
