Believers, recall God's favor to you when the army attacked you. We sent a wind and the armies, which you did not see, to support you. God sees all that you do. (9) When they came upon you from above you and from below you, and when eyes grew wild and hearts reached to the throats, and ye were imagining vain thoughts concerning Allah. (10) There the believers were tried and they were shaken with severe shaking. (11) When the hypocrites and those who were filled with doubt, said: "The promise of God and His Apostle was nothing but deceit." (12) It was there that a group of them said, "People of Yathrib, turn back for there is no place for you to stay." Another group, asking for the Prophet's permission, said, "Our homes are defenseless." In fact, they were not defenseless. They only wanted to run away. (13) If the enemy had entered from all sides and they had been exhorted to treachery, they would have committed it, and would have hesitated thereupon but little. (14) And indeed before this they had agreed with Allah that they would not turn their backs; and the covenant of Allah will be questioned about. (15) Say thou: flight shall not profit you if ye flee from death or slaughter, and lo! ye will not enjoy life except for a little. (16) ۞ Say (to them): “Who can protect you from Allah if He desires an evil for you? And who can prevent Him if He desires to show mercy to you?” They shall find none other than Allah to be their protector or helper. (17) God would surely know those of you who hinder, and those who say to their brothers, 'Come to us,' and come to battle but little, (18) Being niggardly toward you. Then when the fighting cometh, thou beholdest them look unto thee, their eyes rolling about, like the eyes of him who fainteth unto death. Then when the fighting is over they inveigh against you with sharp tongues, being niggardly of the good things. These have not believed; wherefore Allah hath made their works of none effect, and that is with Allah ever easy. (19) They hold that the clans have not retired (for good); and if the clans should advance (again), they would fain be in the desert with the wandering Arabs, asking for the news of you; and if they were among you, they would not give battle, save a little. (20)
