O YOU who have attained to faith! Call to mind the blessings which God bestowed on you (at the time) when [enemy] hosts came down upon you, whereupon We let loose against them a storm wind and [heavenly] hosts that you could not see: yet God saw all that you did. (9) When they came against you from above you and from below you, and when your eyes swerved and your hearts reached your throats, while you thought thoughts about God; (10) There the faithful were put to the proof and they were shaken as if by an earthquake. (11) And when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease (of doubts) said: "Allah and His Messenger (SAW) promised us nothing but delusions!" (12) And when a group among said, “O people of Medinah! This is no place of stay for you, therefore go back to your homes”; and a group among them sought exemption from the Prophet by saying, “Our homes are unprotected” whereas their homes were not unprotected; they willed nothing except to flee. (13) If the (enemy) had entered the city from every side and asked them to rise in revolt, they would have done so, and not hesitated but a little; (14) And yet they had already covenanted with Allah not to turn their backs, and a covenant with Allah must (surely) be answered for. (15) Say thou: flight shall not profit you if ye flee from death or slaughter, and lo! ye will not enjoy life except for a little. (16) ۞ Say: 'Who is he that shall defend you from God, if lie desires evil for you, or desires mercy for you?' They shall find for themselves, apart from God, neither protector nor helper. (17) God certainly knows those among you who create obstacles (on the way that leads to God) and those who say to their brothers, 'Come quickly to us' and very rarely take part in the fighting. (18) being niggardly towards you. When fear comes upon them, thou seest them looking at thee, their eyes rolling like one who swoons of death; but when the fear departs, they flay you with sharp tongues, being niggardly to possess the good things. Those have never believed; God has made their works to fail; and that is easy for God. (19) They think the companies have not [yet] withdrawn. And if the companies should come [again], they would wish they were in the desert among the bedouins, inquiring [from afar] about your news. And if they should be among you, they would not fight except for a little. (20)
