The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. (1) The Romans have been defeated (2) In the neighbouring land. But having been conquered they will conquer (3) within a few years: [for] with God rests all power of decision, first and last. On that day the believers too will have cause to rejoice, (4) at the victory granted by Allah. He grants victory to whomsoever He pleases. He is the Most Mighty, the Most Compassionate. (5) This is Allah's promise and He does not go back on His promise. But most people do not know. (6) they know but the outer surface of this world's life, whereas of the ultimate things they are utterly unaware. (7) What, have they not considered within themselves? God created not the heavens and the earth, and what between them is, save with the truth and a stated term; yet most men disbelieve in the encounter with their Lord. (8) Have they not travelled through the earth that they may observe what was the end of their predecessors who were far mightier and tilled the land and built upon it more than these have ever built? And Allah's Messengers came to them with Clear Signs. It was not Allah Who wronged them, but it is they who wronged themselves. (9) Evil was the end of the harmdoers, because they belied the verses of Allah and mocked at them. (10)
