The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. (1) The Romans are vanquished, (2) in the nearer part of the land; and, after their vanquishing, they shall be the victors (3) within a few years: [for] with God rests all power of decision, first and last. On that day the believers too will have cause to rejoice, (4) at the victory granted by Allah. He grants victory to whomsoever He pleases. He is the Most Mighty, the Most Compassionate. (5) It is a promise of Allah. Allah faileth not His promise, but most of mankind know not. (6) They know an outward part of the present life, but of the Hereafter they are heedless. (7) Do they not think for themselves that God did not create the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them without reason and a determined purpose? But many men reject the meeting with their Lord. (8) Have they not travelled on the earth and seen how the others before them had met their end? They were far more powerful than them, furrowed the earth and colonised it far more than they; and their apostles came to them with visible signs. It was surely not for God to wrong them, they wronged themselves. (9) Therefore evil was the end of those who did evil, for they denied the signs of God and made fun of them. (10)
