The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Alif-Laam-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) The Greeks have been vanquished (2) in the lands close-by; yet it is they who, notwithstanding this their defeat, shall be victorious (3) Within a few years. Allah's is the command before and after; and on that day the believers shall rejoice, (4) at the victory granted by Allah. He grants victory to whomsoever He pleases. He is the Most Mighty, the Most Compassionate. (5) This is Allah's promise and He does not go back on His promise. But most people do not know. (6) They only know the superficial realities of the worldly life and they are unaware of the life to come. (7) Have they not pondered upon themselves? Allah created not the heavens and the earth, and that which is between them, save with truth and for a destined end. But truly many of mankind are disbelievers in the meeting with their Lord. (8) Have they not travelled through the land and seen what end their predecessors met? They were mightier than them: they cultivated the earth more and built more upon it than these have ever built. Their own messengers also came to them with clear signs: God did not wrong them; they wronged themselves. (9) Evil was the end of those evil-doers, for they gave the lie to Allah's Signs and scoffed at them. (10)
