The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Mim. (1) The Romans have been defeated (by the Persians) (2) in the neighbouring land; but after their defeat they shall gain victory in a few years. (3) within a few years: [for] with God rests all power of decision, first and last. On that day the believers too will have cause to rejoice, (4) With the help of Allah, He helps whom He wills, and He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. (5) [It is] the promise of Allah. Allah does not fail in His promise, but most of the people do not know. (6) They know only some appearance of the life of the world, and are heedless of the Hereafter. (7) What, have they not considered within themselves? God created not the heavens and the earth, and what between them is, save with the truth and a stated term; yet most men disbelieve in the encounter with their Lord. (8) What, have they never journeyed in the land and seen what was the end of those before them? They were stronger in might than themselves, and they plowed the land and cultivated it more than they themselves have cultivated it. And to them, their Messengers came with clear signs, and Allah did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. (9) Then the fate of those who committed evil to the extreme was that they denied the signs of Allah and used to mock at them. (10)
