The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif-Laam-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) The Byzantines have been defeated (2) in a nearby land. They will reverse their defeat with a victory (3) In some few years. Allah's is the command, before and after. And on that day the believers will rejoice. (4) With the help of Allah; He helps whom He pleases; and He is the Mighty, the Merciful; (5) The promise of Allah; Allah does not renege on His promise, but most people do not know. (6) People simply know the outward aspect of the worldly life but are utterly heedless of the Hereafter. (7) Have they not inwardly pondered that Allah has not created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, except with truth and a fixed term? And indeed many people deny the meeting with their Lord. (8) What, have they not journeyed in the land and beheld how was the end of those before them? They were stronger than themselves in might, and they ploughed up the earth and cultivated it more than they themselves have cultivated it; and their Messengers came to them with the clear signs; and God would never wrong them, but themselves they wronged. (9) Then the fate of those who committed evil to the extreme was that they denied the signs of Allah and used to mock at them. (10)
