The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Mim. (1) The Romans have been defeated. (2) In the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome. (3) All power belongs to Allah both before and after. On that day will the believers rejoice (4) in God's succour: [for] He gives succour to whomever He wills, since He alone is almighty, a dispenser of grace. (5) [It is] the promise of Allah. Allah does not fail in His promise, but most of the people do not know. (6) They know only the visible worldly life; and are totally neglectful of the Hereafter. (7) Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers. (8) Have they not journeyed in the land and observed what wise hath been the end of those before them? They were stronger than they in power and they broke up the earth and they inhabited it with greater affluence than these have inhabited it, and their apostles came unto them with evidences. And Allah was not one to wrong them, but themselves they were wont to wrong. (9) The end of the evil-doers was terrible, for they had rejected the revelations of God and mocked them. (10)
