The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Alif-Lam-Mim. (1) The Romans have been defeated (2) In the neighbouring land. But having been conquered they will conquer (3) Within three to nine years. The decision of the matter, before and after (these events) is only with Allah, (before the defeat of Romans by the Persians, and after, i.e. the defeat of the Persians by the Romans). And on that Day, the believers (i.e. Muslims) will rejoice (at the victory given by Allah to the Romans against the Persians), (4) with the help of God. He helps whom He pleases: He is the Mighty, and the Merciful. (5) [This is] God's promise. Never does God fail to fulfill His promise - but most people know [it] not: (6) People simply know the outward aspect of the worldly life but are utterly heedless of the Hereafter. (7) Have they never thought to themselves that Allah did not create the heavens and the earth and all that is between except with truth, and for a stated term? Yet most people disbelieve that they will ever meet their Lord. (8) Have they not travelled through the land and seen what end their predecessors met? They were mightier than them: they cultivated the earth more and built more upon it than these have ever built. Their own messengers also came to them with clear signs: God did not wrong them; they wronged themselves. (9) Evil was the end of those evil-doers, for they gave the lie to Allah's Signs and scoffed at them. (10)
