The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Mim. (1) The Romans have been conquered (2) In a near land, and they, after being vanquished, shall overcome, (3) In a few years (less than ten). God's is the imperative first and last. On that day the believers will rejoice (4) With the help of Allah, He helps whom He wills, and He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. (5) This is Allah's promise and He does not go back on His promise. But most people do not know. (6) They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world (i.e. the matters of their livelihood, like irrigating or sowing or reaping, etc.), and they are heedless of the Hereafter. (7) Ponder they not in their minds: Allah hath not created the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain save with a purpose and for a term appointed? And verily many men in the meeting of their Lord are unbelievers. (8) Have they not travelled through the land to see how terrible was the end of the people who lived before them. The people who lived before them were stronger than them in might, in tilling, and in developing the earth. Our Messengers came to them with clear miracles. God did not do an injustice to them but they wronged themselves. (9) Therefore evil was the end of those who did evil, for they denied the signs of God and made fun of them. (10)
