The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Alif Lam Mim. (1) The Romans have been conquered (2) In the nearby land, and after their defeat they will soon be victorious. (3) in a few years. To God belongs the Command before and after, and on that day the believers shall rejoice (4) In Allah succour. He succoureth whomsoever He will, and He is the Mighty, the Merciful. (5) This is Allah's promise; and Allah faileth not His promise. Yet most men know not. (6) They only know the palpable life of this world, and are oblivious of the Hereafter. (7) Do they not think for themselves that God did not create the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them without reason and a determined purpose? But many men reject the meeting with their Lord. (8) Have they not journeyed in the land and observed what wise hath been the end of those before them? They were stronger than they in power and they broke up the earth and they inhabited it with greater affluence than these have inhabited it, and their apostles came unto them with evidences. And Allah was not one to wrong them, but themselves they were wont to wrong. (9) Therefore evil was the end of those who did evil, for they denied the signs of God and made fun of them. (10)
