The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Alif-Lam-Mim. (1) The Greeks have been vanquished (2) in the nearer part of the land; and, after their vanquishing, they shall be the victors (3) Within a few (up to nine) years time; only for Allah is the command, before and after; and the believers will rejoice on that day. (4) in God's succour: [for] He gives succour to whomever He wills, since He alone is almighty, a dispenser of grace. (5) (It is) a Promise of Allah (i.e. Allah will give victory to the Romans against the Persians), and Allah fails not in His Promise, but most of men know not. (6) They know an outward part of the present life, but of the Hereafter they are heedless. (7) Do they not reflect in their own minds? Not but for just ends and for a term appointed, did Allah create the heavens and the earth, and all between them: yet are there truly many among men who deny the meeting with their Lord (at the Resurrection)! (8) Do they not travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength: they tilled the soil and populated it in greater numbers than these have done: there came to them their messengers with Clear (Signs). (Which they rejected, to their own destruction): It was not Allah Who wronged them, but they wronged their own souls. (9) And once again: evil is bound to be the end of those who do evil by giving the lie to God's messages and deriding them. (10)
