The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Alif Lam Mim. (1) Defeated have been the Byzantines (2) in the lands close-by; yet it is they who, notwithstanding this their defeat, shall be victorious (3) All power belongs to Allah both before and after. On that day will the believers rejoice (4) in God's succour: [for] He gives succour to whomever He wills, since He alone is almighty, a dispenser of grace. (5) This is Allah's promise; and Allah faileth not His promise. Yet most men know not. (6) They know only some appearance of the life of the world, and are heedless of the Hereafter. (7) Have they not thought that God has not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them but for a genuine purpose to exist for an appointed term? Many people do not believe in their meeting with their Lord. (8) Have they not travelled through the land and seen what end their predecessors met? They were mightier than them: they cultivated the earth more and built more upon it than these have ever built. Their own messengers also came to them with clear signs: God did not wrong them; they wronged themselves. (9) Therefore evil was the end of those who did evil, for they denied the signs of God and made fun of them. (10)
