The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ Alif Lam Mim. (1) The Romans have been defeated (by the Persians) (2) In the nearer land, and they, after their defeat will be victorious (3) Within three to nine years. The decision of the matter, before and after (these events) is only with Allah, (before the defeat of Romans by the Persians, and after, i.e. the defeat of the Persians by the Romans). And on that Day, the believers (i.e. Muslims) will rejoice (at the victory given by Allah to the Romans against the Persians), (4) in God's succour: [for] He gives succour to whomever He wills, since He alone is almighty, a dispenser of grace. (5) (It is) the promise of Allah. Never does Allah depart from His promise: but most men understand not. (6) People simply know the outward aspect of the worldly life but are utterly heedless of the Hereafter. (7) What, have they not considered within themselves? God created not the heavens and the earth, and what between them is, save with the truth and a stated term; yet most men disbelieve in the encounter with their Lord. (8) Do they not travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength: they tilled the soil and populated it in greater numbers than these have done: there came to them their messengers with Clear (Signs). (Which they rejected, to their own destruction): It was not Allah Who wronged them, but they wronged their own souls. (9) Then the end of those who did evil was the worst [consequence] because they denied the signs of Allah and used to ridicule them. (10)
