The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Alif, Lam, Meem. (1) The Romans have been defeated. (2) In a near land, and they, after being vanquished, shall overcome, (3) within a few years: [for] with God rests all power of decision, first and last. And on that day will the believers [too, have cause to] rejoice (4) in the victory of Allah. Allah gives victory to whosoever He will, and He is the Mighty, the Merciful. (5) The promise of God! God fails not His promise, but most men do not know it. (6) They know only the visible worldly life; and are totally neglectful of the Hereafter. (7) Have they not thought that God has not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them but for a genuine purpose to exist for an appointed term? Many people do not believe in their meeting with their Lord. (8) Have they not travelled through the land and seen what end their predecessors met? They were mightier than them: they cultivated the earth more and built more upon it than these have ever built. Their own messengers also came to them with clear signs: God did not wrong them; they wronged themselves. (9) Evil was the end of those evil-doers, for they gave the lie to Allah's Signs and scoffed at them. (10)
