The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Mim. (1) The Romans have been defeated (2) In the nearby land, and after their defeat they will soon be victorious. (3) Within three to nine years. The decision of the matter, before and after (these events) is only with Allah, (before the defeat of Romans by the Persians, and after, i.e. the defeat of the Persians by the Romans). And on that Day, the believers (i.e. Muslims) will rejoice (at the victory given by Allah to the Romans against the Persians), (4) In Allah succour. He succoureth whomsoever He will, and He is the Mighty, the Merciful. (5) This is the promise of God. God does not ignore His promise, but many people do not know. (6) They know only the visible worldly life; and are totally neglectful of the Hereafter. (7) Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers. (8) Have they not journeyed in the land and observed what wise hath been the end of those before them? They were stronger than they in power and they broke up the earth and they inhabited it with greater affluence than these have inhabited it, and their apostles came unto them with evidences. And Allah was not one to wrong them, but themselves they were wont to wrong. (9) Then the end of those who committed evil was evil, for they belied the signs of God, and they derided them. (10)
