The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Alif Lam Mim. (1) The Romans have been defeated (2) In the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome. (3) within a few years: [for] with God rests all power of decision, first and last. On that day the believers too will have cause to rejoice, (4) He helps whomever He wants. He is Majestic and All-merciful. (5) This is Allah's promise; and Allah faileth not His promise. Yet most men know not. (6) They know the outward of this world's life, but of the hereafter they are absolutely heedless. (7) Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers. (8) And did they not travel in the land to see what sort of fate befell those before them? They were stronger than them, and they cultivated the land and inhabited it more than them, and their Noble Messengers came to them with clear proofs; so it did not befit Allah’s Majesty to oppress them, but it was they who used to wrong themselves. (9) The end of the evil-doers was terrible, for they had rejected the revelations of God and mocked them. (10)
