The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Mim. (1) The Romans have been defeated. (2) In a near land, and they, after being vanquished, shall overcome, (3) In a few years (less than ten). God's is the imperative first and last. On that day the believers will rejoice (4) In the help of God. He helps whom He will; He is all-mighty, ever-merciful. (5) [This is] God's promise. Never does God fail to fulfill His promise - but most people know [it] not: (6) they know but the outer surface of this world's life, whereas of the ultimate things they are utterly unaware. (7) Do they not reflect within themselves: Allah did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them two but with truth, and (for) an appointed term? And most surely most of the people are deniers of the meeting of their Lord. (8) Have they not travelled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who were before them? They were stronger than these in power, and they dug the earth and built upon it more than these have built. Messengers of their own came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty). Surely Allah wronged them not, but they did wrong themselves. (9) Then the fate of those who committed evil to the extreme was that they denied the signs of Allah and used to mock at them. (10)
