The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Alif-Laam-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) The Romans have been defeated (by the Persians) (2) in the neighbouring land; but after their defeat they shall gain victory in a few years. (3) To Allah belongs the Command before and after, and on that Day the believers will rejoice (4) In the victory of Allah. He gives victory to whom He wills, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. (5) This is the promise of God. God does not ignore His promise, but many people do not know. (6) People simply know the outward aspect of the worldly life but are utterly heedless of the Hereafter. (7) Do they not think for themselves that God did not create the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them without reason and a determined purpose? But many men reject the meeting with their Lord. (8) Have they not journeyed in the land and observed what wise hath been the end of those before them? They were stronger than they in power and they broke up the earth and they inhabited it with greater affluence than these have inhabited it, and their apostles came unto them with evidences. And Allah was not one to wrong them, but themselves they were wont to wrong. (9) Evil was the end of those evil-doers, for they gave the lie to Allah's Signs and scoffed at them. (10)
