The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif, Lam, Meem. (1) The Romans are vanquished, (2) In the nearer land (Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Palestine), and they, after their defeat, will be victorious. (3) within a few years: [for] with God rests all power of decision, first and last. And on that day will the believers [too, have cause to] rejoice (4) With the help of Allah. He helps whom He will, and He is exalted in might, most merciful. (5) It is a promise of God; and God does not go back on His promise. Yet most men do not understand: (6) they only know the outward appearance of the life of this world, and they are neglectful of the Hereafter. (7) Do they not think deeply (in their ownselves) about themselves (how Allah created them from nothing, and similarly He will resurrect them)? Allah has created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, except with truth and for an appointed term. And indeed many of mankind deny the Meeting with their Lord. [See Tafsir At-Tabari, Part 21, Page 24]. (8) And did they not travel in the land to see what sort of fate befell those before them? They were stronger than them, and they cultivated the land and inhabited it more than them, and their Noble Messengers came to them with clear proofs; so it did not befit Allah’s Majesty to oppress them, but it was they who used to wrong themselves. (9) Then evil was the end of those who did evil, because they belied the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, Messengers, etc.) of Allah and made mock of them. (10)
