She said, 'O Council, pronounce to me concerning my affair; I am not used to decide an affair until you bear me witness.' (32) They said, "We are men of strength and of great military might, but the command is yours, so see what you will command." (33) She said, "Surely, when mighty kings invade a country, they despoil it and humiliate its noblest inhabitants, these men will do the same, (34) But lo! I am going to send a present unto them, and to see with what (answer) the messengers return. (35) When her Messengers came to Soloman, he said, "Have you brought me wealth? What God has given to me is far better than what He has given to you, but you are happy with your gifts. (36) Return unto them. We verily shall come unto them with hosts that they cannot resist, and we shall drive them out from thence with shame, and they will be abased. (37) Solomon then said, "O Counsellors, which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in submission? (38) A demon from among the jinn said, "I will bring it to you before you get up from your seat. I am strong and trustworthy enough to do it." (39) The one who had some knowledge of the Book said: I shall bring it unto thee ere thy eye twinkleth. Then when he saw it placed before him, he said: this is of the grace of my Lord that He may prove me whether I give thanks or am ungrateful. Whosoever giveth thanks he only giveth thanks for his own soul; and whosoever is ungrateful then verily my Lord is Self-Sufficient, Munificent. (40) He said: "Disguise her throne for her that we may see whether she will be guided (to recognise her throne), or she will be one of those not guided." (41) When the Queen arrived, she was asked: "Is your throne like this one?" She said: "It seems as if it is the same. We had already come to know this and we had submitted ourselves." (42) And that which she used to worship beside God had stopped her [from believing]; for she came of a disbelieving people. (43) It was said to her, 'Enter the pavilion.' But when she saw it, she supposed it was a spreading water, and she bared her legs. He said, 'It is a pavilion smoothed of crystal. She said, 'My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, and I surrender with Solomon to God, the Lord of all Being.' (44)
