(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) (141) when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? (142) Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: (143) "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. (144) I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. (145) Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. (146) among gardens and fountains, (147) And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? (148) "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. (149) Have fear of God and obey me. (150) Do not obey the order of the wasteful, (151) those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" (152) They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. (153) You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' (154) He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. (155) And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." (156) But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. (157) and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. (158) And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. (159)
