The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. (123) When their brother Hud said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? (124) I am a trustworthy messenger for you: (125) so fear you God, and obey you me. (126) I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. (127) Build ye on every high place a monument for vain delight? (128) Erect palaces (thinking) that you will live for ever, (129) And when ye seize, ye seize like unto tyrants. (130) So fear God, and obey me; (131) and [thus] be conscious of Him who has [so] amply provided you with all [the good] that you might think of (132) Gave you increase of cattle and sons, (133) and with gardens and springs. (134) Verily I fear for you the torment of a Mighty Day. (135) They replied: 'It is the same to us whether you admonish or whether you are not one of the admonishers. (136) This [religion of ours] is none other than that to which our forebears clung, (137) We will not be subjected to any chastisement." (138) So they rejected him; and We destroyed them. There is certainly a sign in that; but most of them would not believe. (139) And verily thy Lord? He is the Mighty, the Merciful. (140)
