(The tribe of) A'ad denied the messengers (of Allah). (123) when their brother Hud said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? (124) Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (125) So fear God and listen to me. (126) I seek of you no reward for this; my reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. (127) "Do you build useless monuments on every mountain (128) And do you take to yourselves underground reservoirs, in order to live for ever! (129) When you attack, you attack as tyrants do. (130) "Be, then, conscious of God and pay heed unto me: (131) Fear Him who has bestowed on you what you know, (132) succoured you with flocks and sons, (133) "And gardens and springs. (134) 'Indeed, I fear for you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' (135) They said, "Whether you preach to us or not, (136) This has been happening all along. (137) "And we are not the ones to receive Pains and Penalties!" (138) And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. (139) Surely your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. (140)
