64 verses, revealed in Medina after Exodus (Al-Hashr) before Pilgrimage (Al-Hajj)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ [This is] a surah which We have sent down and made [that within it] obligatory and revealed therein verses of clear evidence that you might remember. (1) AS FOR the adulteress and the adulterer flog each of them with a hundred stripes, and let not compassion with them keep you from [carrying out] this law of God, if you [truly] believe in God and the Last Day; and let a group of the believers witness their chastisement. (2) A man guilty of adultery (or fornication) shall not marry any but the woman guilty of the same or a mushrik woman, and none shall marry a woman guilty of adultery (or fornication) but the man guilty of the same or a mushrik man: such marriages are forbidden to true believers. (3) And those who accuse free women then do not bring four witnesses, flog them, (giving) eighty stripes, and do not admit any evidence from them ever; and these it is that are the transgressors, (4) Except those who repent after this and reform; and God is surely forgiving and kind. (5) And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves, let them testify by swearing by Allah four times that he is of the truthful, (6) And the fifth (oath) (should be) that they solemnly invoke the curse of Allah on themselves if they tell a lie. (7) The spouse will be acquitted of the punishment if she challenges his testimony by saying four times, "God is my witness that he is a liar". (8) And the fifth [oath will be] that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was of the truthful. (9) And had it not been for the grace of Allah and His mercy unto you, and that Allah is Clement, Wise, (ye had been undone). (10)
