64 verses, revealed in Medina after Exodus (Al-Hashr) before Pilgrimage (Al-Hajj)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ This is a chapter which We have revealed to you and made obligatory for you to follow its guidance. We have revealed clear verses in it so that perhaps you may take heed. (1) The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment. (2) The fornicator shall marry none but a fornicatress or an idolatress, and the fornicatress -- none shall marry her but a fornicator or an idolator; that is forbidden to the believers. (3) As for those persons who charge chaste women with false accusations but do not produce four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes and never accept their evidence afterwards, for they themselves are transgressors, (4) Unless they repent thereafter and mend (their conduct); for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (5) One who accuses his wife and has no witnesses except himself shall swear four times by God that his charge is true, (6) and the fifth time, that the curse of Allah shall be upon him, if he should be of the liars. (7) But [as for the wife, all] chastisement shall be averted from her by her calling God four times to witness that he is indeed telling a lie, (8) and, a fifth time that God's wrath will be upon her if he is telling the truth. (9) And had it not been for the grace of Allah and His mercy unto you and that Allah is Relenting, Wise, ye had been lost. (10)
