Light (Al-Noor)
64 verses, revealed in Medina after Exodus (Al-Hashr) before Pilgrimage (Al-Hajj)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ This is a chapter which We have sent down and appointed; and in it We have sent down clear verses in order that you will remember. (1) The adulteress and adulterer should be flogged a hundred lashes each, and no pity for them should deter you from the law of God, if you believe in God and the Last Day; and the punishment should be witnessed by a body of believers. (2) No one should marry a fornicator except a fornicatress or a pagan woman. No one should marry a fornicatress except a fornicator or a pagan man. Such (marriage) is unlawful to the believers. (3) And as for those who accuse chaste women [of adultery,] and then are unable to produce four witnesses [in support of their accusation,] flog them with eighty stripes and ever after refuse to accept from them any testimony - since it is they, they that are truly depraved! (4) Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (5) One who accuses his wife and has no witnesses except himself shall swear four times by God that his charge is true, (6) and the fifth time, that God's curse may be upon him if he is telling a lie. (7) (As for the woman), it shall avert the punishment from her if she swears four times by Allah that the man is false (in his charge) (8) and a fifth time, that the wrath of God shall be upon her, if he should be of the truthful. (9) AND WERE it not for God's favour upon you, [O man,] and His grace, and that God is a wise acceptor of repentance...! (10)
