Light (Al-Noor)
64 verses, revealed in Medina after Exodus (Al-Hashr) before Pilgrimage (Al-Hajj)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ This is a chapter which We have revealed and which We have made obligatory; We have sent down clear revelations in it, so that you may take heed. (1) The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment. (2) The fornicator shall marry none but a fornicatress or an idolatress; and the fornicatress none shall marry her but a fornicator or an idolater; that is forbidden to the believers. (3) And those who accuse chaste women, and produce not four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes, and reject their testimony forever, they indeed are the Fasiqun (liars, rebellious, disobedient to Allah). (4) Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (5) Those who accuse their spouses of committing adultery but have no witness except themselves, should testify four times saying, "God is my witness that I am telling the truth". (6) And yet a fifth, invoking the curse of Allah on him if he is of those who lie. (7) The spouse will be acquitted of the punishment if she challenges his testimony by saying four times, "God is my witness that he is a liar". (8) On the fifth time she should say, "Let the curse of God be upon me if what he says is true." (9) And were it not for Allah’s munificence and His mercy upon you and that Allah is the Acceptor of Repentance, the Wise He would then have unveiled you. (10)
