۞ Thereof (the earth) We created you, and into it We shall return you, and from it We shall bring you out once again. (55) We showed the Pharaoh all of Our miracles, but he called them lies and turned away from them. (56) He said: "Hast thou come to drive us out of our land with thy magic, O Moses? (57) But we surely can produce for thee magic the like thereof; so appoint a tryst between us and you, which neither we nor thou shall fail to keep, at a place convenient (to us both). (58) [Moses] said, "Your appointment is on the day of the festival when the people assemble at mid-morning." (59) Thereupon Pharaoh withdrew [with his counsellors] and decided upon the scheme which he would pursue; and then he came [to the tryst]. (60) and Moses said to them, 'O beware! Forge not a lie against God, lest He destroy you with a chastisement. Whoso forges has ever failed.' (61) So they debated among themselves as to what to do; but they kept their counsel secret, (62) They said: These are most surely two magicians who wish to turn you out from your land by their magic and to take away your best traditions. (63) Wherefore devise your stratagem, and then come in a row; and prospered today is he who overcometh. (64) They said: either thou cast down, or we shall be the first to cast down. (65) He said: Nay! cast down. then lo! their cords and their rods-- it was imaged to him on account of their magic as if they were running. (66) and in his heart Moses became apprehensive. (67) We (Allah) said: "Fear not! Surely, you will have the upper hand. (68) Throw that which is in thy right hand! It will eat up that which they have made. Lo! that which they have made is but a wizard's artifice, and a wizard shall not be successful to whatever point (of skill) he may attain. (69) The magicians, (seeing the miracle), fell down in prostration, saying: "We believe in the Lord of Moses and Aaron." (70) (The Pharaoh) said: "You have come to believe without my dispensation. Surely he is your chief who taught you magic. I will have your hands and feet cut off on alternate sides and crucify you on the trunks of date-palm trees. You will come to know whose punishment is harder and protracted." (71) They said: We do not prefer you to what has come to us of clear arguments and to He Who made us, therefore decide what you are going to decide; you can only decide about this world's life. (72) We believe in our Lord so that He forgives us our sins and the sorcery you have forced us to practice. Allah is Better, and Everlasting' (73) VERILY, as for him who shall appear before his Sustainer [on Judgment Day] lost in sin - his [portion,] behold, shall be hell: he will neither die therein nor live; (74) But whoever comes to Him (Allah) as a believer (in the Oneness of Allah, etc.), and has done righteous good deeds, for such are the high ranks (in the Hereafter), (75) Gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of one who purifies himself. (76)
