Relate in the Book (the story of) Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place in the East. (16) And took cover from them, We sent a spirit of Ours to her who appeared before her in the concrete form of a man. (17) She said, “I seek the refuge of the Most Gracious from you if you fear God.” (18) He said: I am only a messenger of thy Lord, that I may bestow on thee a faultless son. (19) She said, "How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?" (20) He said, “So it is; your Lord has said, ‘This is easy for Me’; and in order that We make him a sign for mankind and a Mercy from Us; and this matter has been decreed.” (21) ۞ So she conceived him, and she retired with him to a remote place. (22) Then the pangs of childbirth brought her to the base of the palm-tree; she said, “Oh, if only had I died before this and had become forgotten, unremembered.” (23) But he called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream. (24) And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates. (25) Eat, then, and drink, and let thine eye be gladdened! And if thou shouldst see any human being, convey this unto him: 'Behold, abstinence from speech have I vowed unto the Most Gracious; hence, I may not speak today to any mortal. (26) Then she came to her people, carrying her baby. They said: "O Mary! You have committed a monstrous thing. (27) Sister of Aaron, your father was not an evil man, nor was your mother an unchaste woman!" (28) So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?" (29) He said, 'Lo, I am God's servant; God has given me the Book, and made me a Prophet. (30) And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive (31) and likewise to cherish my mother; He has not made me arrogant, unprosperous. (32) Peace on me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive! (33) That is Jesus, son of Mary, in word of truth, concerning which they are doubting. (34) Allah is not one to take to Himself a son. Hallowed be He! whensoever He decreeth an affair he only Saith to it: be, and it becometh. (35) And surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, therefore serve Him; this is the right path. (36) Yet different groups differed among themselves. How awful it will be for those who have rejected the truth when a dreadful Day arrives! (37) How wondrous in their hearing and their sight will they be the Day they come unto Us! But today the wrong doers are in error manifest. (38) And warn them of the day of intense regret, when the matter shall have been decided; and they are (now) in negligence and they do not believe. (39) Surely We shall inherit the earth and all that are upon it, and unto Us they shall be returned. (40)
