And mention, [O Muhammad], in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east. (16) and she took a veil apart from them; then We sent unto her Our Spirit that presented himself to her a man without fault. (17) She said: "I seek refuge from thee to (Allah) Most Gracious: (come not near) if thou dost fear Allah." (18) He replied: "I am only a messenger from your Lord (sent) to bestow a good son on you." (19) She said, "How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?" (20) "Even so" he replied, "as such your Lord has said: 'Easy it is for Me. And We shall make him a sign to mankind and a mercy from Us. It is a matter decreed.'" (21) ۞ and in time she conceived him, and then she withdrew with him to a far-off place. (22) Then the birth pangs drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree and she said: "Oh, would that I had died before this and had been all forgotten." (23) He called from below to her: 'Do not sorrow, look, your Lord has provided a rivulet below you, (24) Shake the trunk of the palm-tree towards yourself and fresh and ripe dates shall fall upon you. (25) So eat and drink thou, and cool thine eyes; and if thou beholdest the human beings anyone, say: verily I have vowed to the Compassionate a fast, so I shall not speak today to any human being. (26) She took him to her people and they said, "Mary, this is indeed an strange thing. (27) O sister of Aaron! Your father was not an evil man, nor was your mother an unchaste woman." (28) Thereupon she pointed towards the child; they said, “How can we speak to an infant who is in the cradle?” (29) "He ['Iesa (Jesus)] said: Verily! I am a slave of Allah, He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet;" (30) "And He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me Salat (prayer), and Zakat, as long as I live." (31) And (hath made me) dutiful toward her who bore me, and hath not made me arrogant, unblest. (32) Peace on me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive! (33) This is Jesus, the son of Mary; and this is the truth about him concerning which they are in doubt. (34) It is not befitting to (the majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! when He determines a matter, He only says to it, "Be", and it is. (35) And surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, therefore serve Him; this is the right path. (36) Yet the sectarians differed among themselves. Alas for the unbelievers when they see the Terrible Day! (37) How clearly shall they hear and how clearly shall they see on the day when they come to Us; but the unjust this day are in manifest error. (38) And warn them, [O Muhammad], of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded; and [yet], they are in [a state of] heedlessness, and they do not believe. (39) Surely We shall inherit the earth and all that are upon it, and unto Us they shall be returned. (40)
