Relate in the Book (the story of) Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place in the East. (16) We sent to her Our Spirit (Gabriel) in the resemblance of a perfect human. (17) Mary said, "Would that the Beneficent God would protect me from you. Leave me alone if you are a God fearing person". (18) (The angel) said: "I am only a Messenger from your Lord, (to announce) to you the gift of a righteous son." (19) She said: in what wise shall there be a boy unto me, whereas not a human being hath touched me, nor have I been a harlot? (20) He said: "Thus will it be. Your Lord said: 'It is easy for Me,' and that: 'We shall make him a sign for men and a blessing from Us.' This is a thing already decreed." (21) ۞ And she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place. (22) And the birthpangs surprised her by the trunk of the palm-tree. She said, 'Would I had died ere this, and become a thing forgotten!' (23) Thereupon [a voice] called out to her from beneath that [palm-tree]: "Grieve not! Thy Sustainer has provided a rivulet [running] beneath thee; (24) And shake the trunk of the palm-tree toward thee, thou wilt cause ripe dates to fall upon thee. (25) Eat, drink, and rejoice. Should you see a person going by, tell him that on this day you have promised the Beneficent God to fast and never talk to any human being." (26) At length she brought the (babe) to her people, carrying him (in her arms). They said: "O Mary! truly an amazing thing hast thou brought! (27) O sister of Aaron, your father was never an evil man, nor was your mother unchaste' (28) Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy? (29) [But] he said, "I am God's servant. He has given me the Book and made me a prophet; (30) “And He has made me blessed wherever I be; and ordained upon me prayer and charity, as long as I live.” (31) “And has made me good to my mother and not made me forceful, ill-fated.” (32) “And peace is upon me the day I was born, and on the day I shall taste death, and on the day I will be raised alive.” (33) That is Jesus, the son of Mary - the word of truth about which they are in dispute. (34) God is too Exalted to have a son. When He decides to bring some thing into existence He needs only command it to exist and it comes into existence. (35) And verily Allah is my Lord and your Lord; so worship Him; this is a way straight. (36) Then the factions differed [concerning Jesus] from among them, so woe to those who disbelieved - from the scene of a tremendous Day. (37) How plainly will they see and hear, the Day that they will appear before Us! but the unjust today are in error manifest! (38) Warn thou them of the day of anguish, when the matter shall be determined, and they yet heedless and unbelieving. (39) It is We who will inherit the earth and all who dwell upon it: they shall all return to Us. (40)
