Recount in the Book how Mary withdrew from her people to an eastern place (16) So there she screened herself from them; We therefore sent Our Spirit towards her he appeared before her in the form of a healthy man. (Angel Jibreel peace be upon him.) (17) She said: I verily seek refuge with the Compassionate from thee if thou art God-fearing. (18) If thou fearest God... He said, 'I am but a messenger come from thy Lord, to give thee a boy most pure. (19) Mary said: "How can a boy be born to me when no man has even touched me, nor have I ever been unchaste?" (20) He said, "This is true but your Lord says, "It is very easy for Me. We have decided to give you a son as evidence (of Our existence) for human beings and a mercy from Us. This is a decree already ordained." (21) ۞ When she conceived him she went away to a distant place. (22) The pains of labour drove her to the trunk of a date-palm. She said, "Oh, if only I had died before this and passed into oblivion!" (23) But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the (palm-tree): "Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee; (24) If you shake the trunk of the palm tree, it will provide you with fresh ripe dates. (25) Eat therefore, and drink, and be comforted; and if thou shouldst see any mortal, say, "I have vowed to the All-merciful a fast, and today I will not speak to any man. (26) Carrying her child, she brought him to her people. They said, "O Mary, you have indeed done something terrible! (27) Sister of Aaron, thy father was not a wicked man, nor was thy mother a woman unchaste.' (28) Thereupon Mary pointed to the child. They exclaimed: "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle, a mere child?" (29) The child cried out: "Verily I am Allah's servant. He has granted me the Book and has made me a Prophet (30) He has made me blessed wherever I may be, and has enjoined upon me prayer and almsgiving throughout my life. (31) And (hath made me) dutiful toward her who bore me, and hath not made me arrogant, unblest. (32) There was peace on me the day I was born, and will be the day I die, and on the day I will be raised from the dead." (33) This is Jesus, the son of Mary; and this is the truth about him concerning which they are in doubt. (34) It is not conceivable that God should have taken unto Himself a son: limitless is He in His glory! When He wills a thing to be, He but says unto it "Be" - and it is! (35) [Jesus said], "And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path." (36) Then the sects have differed among themselves; so woe to those who disbelieve in the witness of a Day Mighty! (37) How clearly will they (polytheists and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) see and hear, the Day when they will appear before Us! But the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) today are in plain error. (38) Warn them of the woeful day when the final decree will be issued; they are neglectful and faithless. (39) Surely We shall inherit the earth and all that are upon it, and unto Us they shall be returned. (40)
